I've been living out of a battered truck and a half-broken tent since Starfall, and every trigger pull still feels like a survival game played with Deviants. When the Once Human Development Team published their latest Dev Blog, I read it twice because the February 25 (PT) update touches almost every build I've been testing. They said they remain committed to maintaining the dynamic balance of the combat system, preserving the freshness and strategic depth of gameplay, and delivering an ever-evolving combat experience for Metas. As a player who splits time between sniping, elemental builds, and defensive gear experiments, I can feel that promise in these notes. The update adjusts Battle Skills of certain Deviations with weapon damage types, modifies damage types for Pathfinder, Pyroclasm Starter, and Additional Rules, and enhances Gilded Gauntlets. There is also a fix for Polar Jelly and Invincible Sun, plus a sniper ammo quality-of-life change. Here is how I understand it all.

The Crit Calculation Fix and Battle Skill Damage Bump

I have definitely felt this one in the field. Some weapon-damage-type Deviation Battle Skills failed to correctly calculate certain Crit Hit and Crit DMG attributes under specific circumstances, which made my final damage lower than expected. The update fixes that bug. Because Crit Rate can be unstable and create inconsistent results, the team also increased the Battle Skill damage for these Deviations. That means my burst windows should feel less like a coin flip and more like a reliable plan. I appreciate when a fix comes with a compensation buff instead of just a silent correction.

Vulnerability Types Get Cleaner

The Dev Blog also mentions that Polar Jelly and Invincible Sun incorrectly applied the wrong vulnerability type in practice. After the fix, they now correctly apply Status Vulnerability. To understand why this matters, I have to remember the Dec. 23 (PT), 2025 combat Deviation upgrade. Back then, the team standardized vulnerability types into Weapon Vulnerability and Status Vulnerability. Ideally, Weapon Vulnerability Deviations pair with weapons dealing Weapon DMG, while Status Vulnerability Deviations pair with weapons dealing Status DMG. But weapons like Pathfinder, Pyroclasm Starter, and Additional Rules deal both Weapon DMG and Status DMG. Most combat Deviations cannot simultaneously enhance both damage types, so partial damage loss was inevitable.

Pathfinder, Pyroclasm Starter, and Additional Rules

This is the part that made me open my build planner immediately. Pyroclasm Starter can trigger Burn Keyword while also charging bullets to deal Blaze Elemental Weapon DMG. When I used Deviations that apply Status Vulnerability, the charged Blaze Elemental Weapon DMG could not benefit from the vulnerability effect. When I used Deviations that apply Weapon Vulnerability, the Burn Keyword effect could not benefit. I also noticed that when Additional Rules uses Status Vulnerability Deviations to apply elemental bullets, it cannot benefit from the Status Vulnerability effect and requires switching to Weapon Vulnerability Deviations. That felt clunky, and it punished me for experimenting.

So the February 25 update will uniformly change the damage type of Pathfinder, Pyroclasm Starter, and Additional Rules from Weapon DMG to Status DMG when charged. They will still benefit from Crit Hit/Crit DMG and Weakspot/Weakspot DMG bonuses. To ensure Keyword triggers work in both charged and uncharged states, the trigger condition will be standardized to "when shooting hits a target". Here is a quick table I made for my own notes:

Weapon Previous Charged Damage Type New Charged Damage Type Still Benefits From
Pathfinder Weapon DMG Status DMG Crit Hit, Crit DMG, Weakspot, Weakspot DMG
Pyroclasm Starter Weapon DMG Status DMG Crit Hit, Crit DMG, Weakspot, Weakspot DMG
Additional Rules Weapon DMG Status DMG Crit Hit, Crit DMG, Weakspot, Weakspot DMG

That single change should make elemental bullet builds and Burn-focused setups far more coherent. I can finally pair Status Vulnerability Deviations without losing half of my damage identity.

Gilded Gauntlets Get Some Love

I have always wanted to love Gilded Gauntlets, but they provided slightly lower benefits compared to other key defensive gear. The main reason was insufficient Crit Rate, which led to inconsistent overall damage. This balance update enhances them, and I am curious to see whether they can now compete in high-pressure fights. For a defensive piece, consistency matters as much as raw protection, so this buff makes sense to me.

Sniper Ammo and Fire Rate Freedom

Many players, including me, have complained that high Fire Rate sniper rifles like Pathfinder and Octopus! Grilled Rings! incur higher bullet costs compared to other weapons. This update will increase sniper ammo production outside RaidZone Mode. That means I can use these weapons more freely in open-world exploration and regular combat. It is a small change on paper, but it changes how often I bring a sniper instead of leaving it in storage.

Compensation and Final Thoughts

To ensure a smooth transition, the team will issue 3 Blueprint Conversion Attempts to all players after this update. That is a nice safety net for anyone who needs to rework a blueprint after the damage type changes. The Dev Blog ends by inviting suggestions through the Once Human Co-Dev Feedback Platform or community channels, and I genuinely hope players use those channels because this kind of transparency helps.

As a Meta, I am excited to test new Deviant pairings, revisit Pyroclasm Starter, and see whether Gilded Gauntlets finally earn a permanent slot. The wasteland after Starfall is still brutal, but updates like this make the survival game feel more strategic, more flexible, and more alive. I will be logging in on February 25 to try it all myself. 🔥🎯🛠️
